Tiers carrying a load above
10 in tier: 5 dowels in a ring about 5 in across, about 1.5 in inside the 8 in tier above.
8 in tier: 4 dowels in a ring about 3 in across, about 1.5 in inside the 6 in tier above.
Push each dowel to the board, mark it level with the surface, then pull it out and cut so the load rests on the rod, not the cake. Level dowels mean a level tier. The top tier carries nothing, so it takes none.

Doweling a tiered cake
Every tier except the top one carries weight, so it needs dowels to stop the tier above sinking in. The number comes from the footprint of the tier resting on top: about 4 for a small tier, up to 8 under a wide one, set in a ring just inside its edge. A tall or travelling stack gets a single rod through the middle to stop it sliding.
The load
Dowels carry the tier above
A stacked tier is not resting on the sponge below it, it is resting on the dowels. Without them the top tier presses down and slowly sinks into the soft cake underneath, and the whole stack leans. Each supporting tier gets its own ring of dowels cut to its exact height, so the load sits on the rods and the cake keeps its shape from the kitchen to the table.
How many
Sized to the tier resting on top
The count follows the footprint of the tier above, not the tier you are pushing them into. A small 6 in tier on top needs about 4 dowels under it. A 10 in tier needs 6, and anything wider than that needs 8. A base tier 12 in or larger also takes a few extra rods towards the centre, where the weight is heaviest.
The ring
Set just inside the upper tier's edge
Mark where the tier above will sit, then space the dowels evenly in a ring about an inch and a half inside that line, so none can poke out past the cake above. Push each one to the board, mark it level with the surface, pull it out and cut, then set them all back. Level dowels mean a level tier.
The centre rod
One rod stops the stack sliding
A ring of dowels holds the weight but does not stop a tier twisting or sliding, which is the risk on a tall stack or a delivery over bumps. A single sharpened rod driven down through every tier and board locks the whole cake together. For three tiers or more, or any cake going in the car, put one in.
FAQ
Common questions
How many dowels do I need for a tiered cake?
It depends on the tier resting on top. A tier up to 8 in across needs about 4 to 5 dowels under it, a 10 in tier needs 6, and anything wider needs 8. Put them in a ring in the tier below, sized to the tier above, and repeat for every tier except the top one.
Do I need a central dowel in a tiered cake?
For two tiers that stay put, the rings of dowels are usually enough. For three tiers or more, or any cake you are driving to a venue, add one sharpened rod down through the whole stack. It stops the tiers sliding or twisting on the journey.
How far apart should cake dowels be?
Set them in an even ring about an inch and a half inside the edge of the tier that goes on top, so none can poke out past it. The tool works out the spacing around that ring for your tier sizes.
Can you use too many dowels in a cake?
Yes. Packing in far more than you need turns the tier into a pincushion, weakens the sponge, and makes it hard to cut cleanly at the table. Match the count to the tier above and add a few only if the cake is unusually heavy.
What size dowels for a stacked cake?
Quarter-inch wooden dowels or plastic rods carry most tiers. For a wide, heavy base tier use thicker plastic rods. Cut every dowel to the exact height of the tier it sits in so the load rests on the rod, not the cake.
