Sizing and pricing a wedding cake

A wedding cake is sized by stacking tiers until the wedding portions clear the guest count, then priced by multiplying those portions by your own rate per slice.

Guests to tiers

Work the stack down from the guest list

Start with how many people the cake has to feed, then stack tiers until the count clears it with a little spare. A 12 in, 10 in, and 8 in stack comes to about 118 slim wedding slices, enough for 100 guests with room over. A smaller 10, 8, and 6 in gives about 74. Always leave a few for seconds and for a slice boxed to take home.

The portion

A wedding slice is smaller than a party slice

A wedding portion is the slim finger slice, about 1 in by 2 in, served on a plate after the meal. A party portion is nearer 1.5 in by 2 in, the piece you would hand someone at a birthday. The same cake gives far fewer party slices than wedding slices, so quote the one that matches how it will be cut.

The price

Price the portions at your own rate

The simplest honest way to price a wedding cake is your rate per portion times the number of portions. Set the rate to cover your ingredients, your time, and the finish you are giving them. Sugar flowers, a complicated design, and delivery sit on top of that base. For a full costed price, use the Cake Pricing Calculator.

The deposit

Half at booking holds the date

A wedding is booked months out, so a deposit holds the date and covers you if plans change. Half at booking and the balance a couple of weeks before the day is a common split. Make the deposit non-refundable in writing, since a booked wedding date is one you have turned other work away for.

FAQ

Common questions

What size wedding cake do I need for 100 guests?

A three tier stack of 12 in, 10 in, and 8 in rounds gives around 118 wedding portions, comfortably covering 100 guests. A 10, 8, and 6 in stack gives about 74, better suited to a wedding of around 70. If the cake is the dessert rather than served alongside one, size up, because party slices are larger.

How many does a 3 tier wedding cake serve?

A 10, 8, and 6 in round stack serves about 74 wedding portions, and a 12, 10, and 8 in serves about 118. It depends on the tin sizes and whether you cut wedding or party slices. Enter the guest count above and it suggests a stack.

How much should I charge for a wedding cake?

Price your portions at a rate that covers ingredients, time, and finish, then add design work and delivery. This tool multiplies your per-portion rate by the portions as a starting point. It is not a fixed quote, and a plain buttercream cake costs far less per portion than heavy sugar work.

How big a deposit should I take?

Half the total at booking, with the balance a couple of weeks before the day, is common for a wedding. Put in writing that the deposit is non-refundable, since holding the date means turning other work away.
