How it works
Start with your costs
A dozen cookies can be three hours of work
Count mixing, cutting, icing preparation, decorating, packing and customer messages. Enter the minutes you actively work. Drying time is not another paid hour if you use that time elsewhere. Avoid counting the same minutes twice.
Pay yourself first
Your wage and your profit are separate
The calculator pays your chosen hourly rate before adding profit. Adding 25% to a cost is a markup. Keeping 25% of the final selling price is a margin. For a 25% margin with no fees, divide cost by 0.75.
The saleable batch
Broken cookies still cost money
Bake and decorate 24 cookies but sell only 22, and those 22 must cover the ingredients and time for all 24. Packaging is applied only to the cookies you can sell. A percentage allowance rounds the saleable count down.
One order
Spread a fixed payment fee over the actual quantity
A fixed transaction fee is charged once per order, not once per cookie. Choose the order size before quoting. The calculation covers that fixed fee plus the percentage fee on the full selling price. Tax and delivery remain separate.
Next job
Size the icing and the box plan
Work out the royal icing before pricing the ingredients. For mixed gift boxes, use the cookie box batch planner. The recipe cost calculator helps with individual ingredient packs.
Method
Use a time breakdown, not another bakery's price
Decorator Lisa He's Borderlands Bakery cost breakdown shows why preparation and customer communication belong in the calculation. The figures here are editable examples. Your design, market and costs decide the quote.
FAQ
Common questions
How much should I charge for a dozen decorated sugar cookies?
Use your own costs and hands-on time. In this example, 24 cookies cost £8 in ingredients, £4 in overhead and £36 in labour, plus 30p packaging each. With no rejects or fees, a 25% margin gives £3.07 per cookie, or £36.84 per dozen. These are example inputs, not a market rate.
Is a 25% margin the same as a 25% markup?
No. A £30 cost with a 25% markup sells for £37.50, leaving a 20% margin. A 25% margin needs a £40 selling price before payment fees. This calculator uses margin.
Does it include my decorating time?
Yes. Decorating minutes per cookie are multiplied by all cookies baked, then added to your batch preparation, packing and admin minutes. Your hourly pay is a cost before profit.
Can I use dollars or price a smaller order?
Yes. Pick your currency and enter the actual order quantity. Currency changes the symbol without converting your entered costs. Fixed payment fees are spread over that selected order.
