Priced by the batch, because the oven and the washing up cost the same for six as for twelve. The margin is your profit for running the business, not your wage: your time is already in the cost. The supermarket tray is not the benchmark; you sell decorated, made-to-order cakes.

Pricing cupcakes
Cupcakes are priced by the batch: everything you spend on a dozen, ingredients, cases, boxes, your hours, and overhead, plus a margin, divided by twelve.
The batch
Price the batch, not the cupcake
The oven runs the same for six cupcakes as for twelve, and so does the washing up. Cost the whole batch first, ingredients, cases, boxes, your time, and a slice of overhead, then divide. That is why a single cupcake order is never worth a twelfth of a dozen, and why a minimum order exists.
Your time
Decorating is the biggest cost in the box
The sponges take minutes of hands-on work. The swirl, the toppers, and the boxing take the hours. A batch with hand-made florals can carry two hours of decorating, and at any honest hourly rate that is more than every ingredient combined. Count the real minutes, not the ones the recipe card claims.
The comparison
The supermarket tray is not your competitor
A supermarket sells a plain factory tray. You sell cakes made to order, in the customer's colours, for their party, handed over on the day they need them. Price against what you make and what it costs you, not against a shelf price that has none of your work in it.
The boxes
Cases, boxes, and toppers are real money
A presentation box, inserts, cases, and a sticker can add a pound or more per half dozen before anything is baked. It is the cost bakers most often swallow without noticing. Put it in the batch cost and the price carries it for you.
FAQ
Common questions
How much should I charge for a dozen cupcakes?
Work from your own batch cost plus a margin. As a guide from the worked examples above: simple swirl cupcakes land around £33 a dozen, decorated around £45, and elaborate hand-finished work £60 or more. If a dozen sells for less than the batch costs you to make, the price is wrong.
Why are homemade cupcakes more expensive than supermarket ones?
Because they are different products. A supermarket tray is baked in a factory weeks ahead. Yours are baked to order, decorated by hand to a brief, and collected fresh. The price carries real ingredients, hours of skilled work, and a business behind it.
Should I set a minimum order?
Yes. The oven, the mixing, and the clean-up cost the same for four as for twelve, so tiny orders lose money at any per-cupcake price. Most bakers set a minimum of six or twelve, and it is easier to hold to when the calculator shows what a batch really costs.
How do I price cupcakes for a wedding?
Price the batch the same way, then add what a wedding adds: presentation boxes, a dessert-table setup at the venue, and the delivery run. Use the Delivery Fee Calculator for the trip, and quote the setup time at your hourly rate.
